Ankylosing Spondylitis – Pain Management

Medications

Some kinds of drugs are effective in treating ankylosing spondylitis. NSAIDs are the most common options as they can alleviate stiffness, pain, and other inflammatory effects. These include naproxen, indomethacin, ibuprofen, and many other drugs. Long-acting NSAIDs can improve sleep if taken at night. Another option is corticosteroid, a powerful inflammation fighter. It can be injected into your affected joints to bring temporary effects or taken orally to calm down inflammation. TNFis and DMARDs are also common in managing pain caused by ankylosing spondylitis. Keep in mind that these drugs would cause some side effects, such as heartburn, upset stomach, kidney disease, or stomach ulcers. That’s why it is important to consider carefully and follow the instructions before taking them. [4]
