How to Start the BRAT Diet
During the first few hours of your stomach illness, you might want to skip eating foods. Wait until diarrhea and vomiting have stopped so that the stomach would rest. Before starting the BRAT diet, it is advisable to start with sipping sports drinks or sucking on ice chips or popsicles. This would be helpful in replacing electrolytes and water loss. After 24 hours, you can start the BRAT diet. Keep in mind that it is limiting and not so nutritious, so you should not stay on it for an extended period. Around the third day, you need to slowly add normal foods to your diet. These include white meat like turkey or chicken, cooked veggies and fruits, as well as soft-cooked eggs. The key is to follow the cues of your body. The symptoms might return if you consume too various foods early. [6]
