Osteoporosis Causes & Risk Factors

Medications

Some medications would increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. This condition is also known as secondary osteoporosis, which is usually a result of taking glucocorticoid steroids. Injected or long-term corticosteroids like cortisone or prednisone can also be a risk factor. Studies have also shown that certain cancer and antiseizure medications are linked to osteoporosis. These drugs can affect osteoclasts, making it more difficult for the body to absorb calcium. Those who take thyroid hormones can also increase the risk of bone thinning. If you are taking any supplements and medications, make sure to consult your doctor before starting.[3]
