Osteoporosis Causes & Risk Factors

Menopause

Another major risk factor for osteoporosis is menopause. It is the period when a woman stops having periods. Most people reach their menopause around the ages of 45 to 55. Due to associated changes in hormone levels, menopause would trigger the body of a woman to lose bone more quickly. A consistent level of estrogen is needed for maintaining the rate of bone replacement. While men keep losing bone around this age, the rate is slower than women. Nevertheless, both men and women tend to lose bone at the same rate after 65 years old.[2]
