Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome – 12 Facts to Know

What Is Iliotibial Band Syndrome?

The iliotibial band or IT band is a long piece of fascia or connective tissue. It runs from the hip to the shinbone and the knee, along the outside of the leg. This part plays a key role in rotating, abducting, and extending the hip area. In addition, it can help move and stabilize the side of the knee as well as protect the exterior thigh. Repeated and overuse flexion as well as knee extension would lead to IT band syndrome, a common knee injury. It happens when the tissue is inflamed or irritated. This tightness leads to friction and pain when you bend the knee. [1]
