Type 2 Diabetes Causes

Aging

The risk of type 2 diabetes tends to be higher in older adults. It is mainly because aging leads to changes in the ability of the pancreas to release insulin. In addition, cells in an aging liver, known as hepatocytes, would not respond to insulin well and thus affect the regulation of sugar levels in the blood. While the condition is more prevalent in those who are over 45 years old, more young adults, teenagers, and children are developing the symptoms due to unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits. [5]

Lack of Sleep

Sleep deprivation is linked to a considerable increase in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Scientists have not found out the exact reason. However, it is believed that sleep problems may lead to a higher level of cortisol, also known as stress hormone. This would affect the release of insulin as well as overall response of the body to insulin. Therefore, a lack of sleep in the long term may be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. [6]
