IBS – Foods to Eat and Foods to Avoid

Legumes and Beans

Legumes and beans are great sources of fiber and protein. However, these foods would lead to symptoms of IBS. This is mainly because they contain oligosaccharides, a compound that may resist intestinal enzymes and thus affect digestion. Although beans may help with constipation by increasing bulk in stools, they may increase abdominal cramps, bloating, and gas as well. Therefore, if you notice symptoms of IBS, it is better to avoid or reduce the consumption of legumes and beans in the diet. If you eat these foods, consider soaking them overnight and rinsing them with clean water before preparing. This can make it easier for the body to digest them. [2]
