Lower Levels of Homocysteine
Another benefit of folic acid is to lower the homocysteine levels. This is an inflammatory molecule that can increase the risk of developing heart disease. In general, folic acid is able to reduce the amount of this element since it is needed in the process of transforming homocysteine into methionine. Without sufficient folate, this process can be slowed down, thus leading to an increase in the levels of homocysteine. Taking folic acid supplements on a daily basis can result in a 25-percent drop in this substance. However, keep in mind that this is not associated with a reduced chance of heart disease because there are many other risk factors for this health condition. [3]
