10 Osteoporosis Treatments You Should Know

Denosumab

Denosumab, or known by its brand name Prolia, is a monoclonal antibody drug capable of slowing down the amount of bone broken down in the natural bone regrowth. This leads to a reduced risk of fracture, and higher density of your bone minerals.

Once every six months, Prolia is injected subcutaneously (under the skin). Even better, the syringe is crafted in such a way that anyone could inject themselves. Your pharmacist or doctor can demonstrate how to go about it for the first timer.

Denosumab is used to manage osteoporosis in:

Postmenopausal women faced with an increased risk of fractures; and

Men with this condition challenged with a high risk of fractures and looking for an alternative to bisphosphonates.

Your doctor often prescribed this medication if you find taking bisphosphonates challenging. This condition is first treated for about three years. However, doctors ensure that you have sufficient vitamin D and calcium before commencing with treatment using denosumab. [3]
