What is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSD)

Causes of RSD

RSD is a condition characterized by chronic pain. The main cause is the dysfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system. This results in abnormal excitation and irritation of nervous tissues and causes unusual impulses along nerves that affect skin and blood vessels. Some studies have shown that a catecholamine called norepinephrine produced by sympathetic nerves can activate pain pathways after nerve or tissue injury. This leads to RSD. Overall, there is no single cause of RSD, but many triggers that would produce similar signs and symptoms. [3]
