Non-celiac gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance is a common disease in which your body has adverse reactions to rye, barley, or wheat due to a protein called gluten. Unlike celiac disease, this condition is less severe, but it is still very uncomfortable. While the underlying cause is still unknown, it seems to involve the gastrointestinal tract and immune system. This post will outline 10 symptoms that most people often associate with gluten intolerance.
Constipation or Diarrhea
Getting constipation and diarrhea is normal, but it might be a common sign of gluten intolerance when it occurs more often. This is because people with the condition might have inflammation in their gut after consuming gluten-containing foods. This eventually damages their gut lining and result in poor absorption of nutrients, which triggers frequent constipation and diarrhea. Around 50% of gluten-sensitive patients often have diarrhea, whereas 25% have e constipation. In addition, the feces might be smelly and pale because of poor absorption of nutrients. In severe cases, frequent diarrhea would lead to some complications such as fatigue or dehydration. [1]
