Loss of Fluids
A severe loss of fluids would lead to hyponatremia. The most obvious example is chronic nausea and vomiting. Due to some health issues, your body will respond by removing most of the contents in the stomach, including fluids and essential electrolytes like sodium. The same occurs in people with diarrhea as these components will be lost in the stools. Active people and professional athletes can be at higher risk because their bodies tend to sweat excessively and lead to dehydration, a major risk factor for hyponatremia. Thus, it is important to compensate for these losses with sufficient sodium-containing drinks or foods. [9]
