Hypercalcemia – Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

Hypercalcemia is a health issue in which the level of calcium in the blood is higher than usual. While calcium is an important mineral, having too much would lead to many health issues that cause kidney stones, weaken the bones, as well as interfere with how your brain and heart work. There is a variety of causes and each trigger results in different signs. In this guide, we will show you some common causes, symptoms, and treatment options for people with hypercalcemia.

16 Causes of Hypercalcemia

Hyperparathyroidism

Hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia in many cases. In this condition, one or several of your four parathyroid glands, which are located around the thyroid gland, are enlarged with the growth of noncancerous, small cells. They are responsible for regulating the release of parathyroid hormone or PTH, which plays a key role in controlling the level of calcium in your blood. As a result, it leads to a calcium imbalance and causes hypercalcemia. Hyperparathyroidism is especially common in women who are between 50 and 60 years old. [1]
