Facts about Bell’s Palsy

Causes of Bell’s Palsy

The precise cause of Bell’s palsy is still unknown. Most cases are usually associated with a viral infection. Some viruses that are related to this condition include influenza B, mumps, German measles or rubella, respiratory illnesses, cytomegalovirus infections, infectious mononucleosis, shingles, chickenpox, genital herpes, cold sores, hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

The nerve that is responsible for facial muscles passes through a corridor of bone before reaching the face. A viral infection would make it become swollen and inflamed, which leads to Bell’s palsy. In addition to facial muscles, this nerve also affects taste, saliva, and tears. [3]
