Signs & Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

The thyroid gland is located in the neck, and it serves the primary function of secreting hormones that are needed for the body to function correctly. The gland produces two hormones- thyroxine and triiodothyronine- which are secreted directly into the blood to regulate the metabolism of the body. However, if any irregularity occurs in how this endocrine gland functions, it will have a direct effect on bodily functions. If the gland does not secrete enough hormones (hypothyroidism), some of the body functions fail to perform as they should. On the other hand, too much secretion (hyperthyroidism) can lead to rapid body functions. It is therefore crucial that you are familiar with the symptoms of thyroid problems so that you can be self-aware and at the instance of any of these symptoms, you can seek medical attention. Some of these symptoms are discussed below.

Eye Problems

Not every eye problem indicates that you have a thyroid problem; however, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can cause you to experience a number of issues with your eyes and sight. Some of the symptoms you might experience include swollen eyes, itchy eyes, blurry eyesight, sensitivity to light, double vision and more. Since there is a wide range of things that can cause eye problems, it is imperative to see a physician when you notice any symptom. This is to ensure that the real cause of the problem is discovered and treated. If your eye problem is found to be related to thyroid problems, the doctor will put you on the right track to addressing it.
