What is Melanin?

Melanin Synthesis

Melanin is biosynthesized in several steps. Firstly, the substance L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine is catalyzed by tyrosinase, which is found in melanocytes. Typically black or brown in color, melanin deposits determine the pigment of the skin. Your skin tone can vary, depending on the distribution and number of the melanosomes. In addition, melanin can absorb light and protect DNA from the harmful effects of UV radiation. We can find melanin in some body parts, including hair, inner ear, irises or pupils of the eyes, adrenal gland, and some brain areas like locus coeruleus and substantia nigra.[2]
