What is Melanin?

Types of Melanin

Melanin can be broken down into different types. These include:

– Eumelanin: This type can be found in the skin, hair, and dark areas around your nipples. It is especially abundant in black groups and determines brown and black color to your eyes, skin, and hair. In people with a small amount of eumelanin, their hair might be blonde.

– Neuromelanin: This type can be found in many brain regions. A loss of neuromelanin might lead to some neurological conditions.

– Pheomelanin: This form can be found in the skin and hair as well. It determines the red and pink colors, especially in red-haired people. However, pheomelanin does not provide protective effects against UV radiation.[3]
