What is Melanin?

What Is Melanin?

Melanin is the pigment that determines the color of the eyes, hair, and skin. It is created by melanocytes, which are body cells found in the outer skin layer. People are born with the same levels of melanocytes. Nevertheless, cells in some people produce more melanin, which makes them have darker skin tones. When melanin accumulates in some parts and darkens the skin, it causes hyperpigmentation. It is possible to reduce or lower the production of melanin in the skin. However, there are certain limitations and risks.[1]
