Keto Diet and Cholesterol: Does It Help or Hurt?

Overview

A keto diet is a low carbohydrate diet, high in fats with moderate proteins. It is largely different from a low-fat diet in the amount of triglycerides and healthy cholesterol built over time. Several reports have indicated the significance of a keto diet to cholesterol levels in the body. There’s a wide range of conflicts amongst different research sources concerning the effects of a keto diet on triglycerides and cholesterol levels in the blood.

There are two major classes of cholesterol, namely Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is often referred to as bad cholesterol, while HDL is termed good cholesterol. The ratio between the two cholesterol types in the blood determines, to a large extent, the overall health. A balance of HDL/LDL should be maintained to avoid setting off cardiovascular problems, such as atherosclerosis, or even diabetes mellitus.

People with high cholesterol levels would like to watch their cholesterol intake, as higher levels may be devastating. Consuming a keto diet has profound consequences on cholesterol blood levels. Studies have cut crosswise the topic, and a few of them are discussed shortly.
