What Is Hematology

A Short History of Hematology

The history of hematology was first recorded in ancient Egypt when blood-letting tools were used. In 1642, a major breakthrough happened when a Dutch scientist called Antonie van Leuuweenhoek created the first microscope that can identify blood cells. The “Father of Hematology” is William Hewson, who discovered leukocytes and clotting features of blood in 1770. The first blood transfusion from people to people was conducted in 1818 by James Blundell. However, it was not until 100 years later did Reuben Ottenberg identify different blood types. These days, hematology is an important study that helps us understand more about blood and associated conditions.[2]
