What Is Hematology

Anatomy of Blood

Blood is comprised of many components, including plasma, platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells.

– Red blood cells make up around 45 percent of the blood in the body. They are responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to other body tissues and carbon dioxide to the lungs for exhalation. These cells have a disc shape and are mostly produced in the bone marrow.

– White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow as well. They are an important part of the immune system and help fight infections. Along with platelets, these components account for around 1 percent of the blood in the body.

– Platelets are colorless and small components that stick together. They can prevent or stop bleeding by interacting with clotting proteins.

– Plasma is the fluid element of the blood. It consists of up to 92 percent water and other components, such as vitamins, hormones, fats, sugar, mineral salt, and proteins. [3]
