Crohn’s Disease – Causes, Diagnosis, Treatments

What Causes Crohn’s Disease?

Inflammation Caused by Immune System Reaction

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease appearing when the gastrointestinal tracts become irritated and swollen. The causes of GI tract inflammation are still unclear, and some people believe it is associated with inappropriate immune system response.

The immune system can identify and attack harmful invaders like germs, bacteria, and viruses to keep people healthy. However, in some circumstances, the immune system will mistakenly recognize healthy cells as foreign bodies and try to eliminate them. Thus, the defense action triggers inflammation and may result in a series of more severe conditions such as ulcers and injuries.

Although the immune system reaction might be one of the potential contributors to Crohn’s inflammation, scientists haven’t classified it into an autoimmune disorder.
