Vitamin A – Health Benefits & Risks

Vitamin A and Acne

Acne is an inflammatory and chronic skin condition. It causes blackheads and painful spots to develop on the chest, back, and face. The disorder happens when some glands are clogged up with oils and dead skins. Although these spots are harmless, they would affect mental health and result in depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. It has been shown that a deficiency of vitamin A is linked to a higher risk of acne as it leads to an overproduction of keratin in hair follicles. This makes it harder for dead cells to be eliminated, causing blockages. Some medications based on vitamin A are actually effective in treating severe cases of acne. However, make sure to be aware of possible side effects before starting. [5]
