The Function of the Liver

Mineral Storage

The liver provides a lot of storage space for many important minerals, vitamins, and nutrients absorbed from foods. This process happens when these substances pass through the hepatic portal vein in the organ. The storage allows your body to ensure the homeostasis of glucose in the blood. Thus, you can have a constant supply of these important components to the tissues. In some cases, the liver might also store them as a backup when you suffer from a serious deficiency. But when iron and some other minerals build up too much, they would lead to hemochromatosis, a rare disorder that requires medical attention. [2]
