Foods That Can Trigger IBS Attacks

Legumes and Beans

Legumes and beans should be limited in the diet of those with IBS. The main reason is that these foods are high in carbs, which can be digested poorly by the system. As a result, gut bacteria may ferment and worsen the symptoms. Try to reduce your consumption of soybeans, lima beans, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, butter beans, black-eyed peas, or baked beans. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, it can be hard to meet the protein needs without legumes or beans. In these cases, consider canned products as they have been rinsed well. [6]

Other Foods

People with IBS should avoid spicy foods. Studies have found out that adding chili peppers to the diet may trigger or worsen the symptoms. Also, limit products with artificial sweeteners as they are often poorly tolerated by the digestive system. Consuming them may lead to issues like bloating or gas. Make sure to read the labels carefully when you purchase sugar-free ice cream, sugar alternatives, or sugar-free gums. Stevia, maple syrup, and table sugar can be tolerated better. Alcohol also has a bad reputation for affecting people with IBS. Last but not least, soda and other carbonated drinks may also lead to bloating and intestinal gas. [7]
