Foods That Can Trigger IBS Attacks

High-FODMAP Fruits

Like veggies, many fruits are high in FODMAP and may trigger IBS attacks. These include pears, mango, grapefruit, cherries, blackberries, apricots, apples, watermelon, pomegranates, prunes, plums, peaches, or nectarines. Try to limit your consumption and replace it with low-FODMAP fruits, such as blueberries, bananas, grapes, cantaloupe, lemon, kiwi, oranges, pineapples, or strawberries. Many people with IBS may also have issues with raw fruits. In these cases, consider cooking fruits or veggies to help the digestive system handle them easier. [4]

Gluten-Containing Foods

Gluten refers to a group of proteins that can be found in barley, wheat, rye, and other grains. They may trigger IBS attacks in some people. The risk is especially high in those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease. Studies have shown that changing to a gluten-free diet can help improve the symptoms. Common alternatives include oats, quinoa, buckwheat, sorghum, coconut flour, or almond flour. [5]
