Shigellosis, also known as Shigella infection, is a condition that affects the digestive system. It is caused by Shigella bacteria and may lead to fever, diarrhea, or stomach pain in infected individuals. There are different strains of Shigella bacteria, which are very contagious. You may contract Shigella when swimming in contaminated water or consuming contaminated water or food. That’s why Shigellosis is often considered a form of food poisoning. [1]
