Essential Health Screenings for the Elder

Hearing Exams

Presbycusis is an age-related hearing loss that commonly affects both ears equally. The disorder is one of the common diseases linked to aging. It is reported that every one in three Americans aged between 65 -74 years old has hearing loss, and approximately 50% of people older than 75 years old have difficulty hearing. The main reason contributing to presbycusis is the changes arising with age in the inner ears. This is the area responsible for detecting sound waves, converting sound waves to nerve impulses, and transmitting nerve impulses to the brain. However, it is very easy to overlook the early symptoms since presbycusis takes place slowly. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association suggests seeing an audiologist every three years after 50 years old. [5]
