Essential Health Screenings for the Elder

Dental Exams

Dental health in the elderly is likely to be ignored because many believe tooth problems are not big deals and they are natural occurrences with increasing ages. Though dental problems rarely evolve into cancers and result in death, they can cause great inconvenience, hindering the quality of life severely. In the United States, having routine dental care is extremely expensive. It brings more challenges for those seniors who are economically disadvantaged or not covered by insurance.

After the age of 65, dental professionals generally recommend that senior people schedule a minimum of twice a year oral health checkups. The dentists will primarily check teeth and gums, diagnosing tooth decay (cavities), root caries, gingival recession, tooth loss, gum diseases, and other oral cancers. [4]
