Common Facts about Immunoglobulins

Immunoglobulin A (Ig A)

Ig A is mainly found in mucosal surfaces and secretions from the body, such as tears, saliva etc. It constitutes roughly 15 percent of the total antibody count in the average human body. Immunoglobulin A has been linked to other functions beyond tagging pathogens and toxins. They effectively dispatch toxins and pathogens which enter the body by inhalation or ingestion. This isotype of antibodies is often secreted by what is known as the lamina propria of the mucosal lining. Ig A is also prevalent in nasal mucus, intestinal fluid and breast milk.[2]
