It is a myth and it is totally wrong that you can swallow your tongue. The thing that is commonly happening is to bite your tongue and there are methods to protect you from that during the episode of seizures.
The rescuer should never put any instrument inside the child’s mouth unless prescribed by his dentist (like a mouth guard). Putting anything inside the mouth of the child during the attack of seizures harms him and might make him choke on the object. The risk of putting any instrument or object inside the mouth of the child experiencing a seizure episode will definitely outweigh the benefit of not biting the child’s tongue. First of all, the person trying to save the child tongue by trying to insert an object inside his mouth, that person’s arms and fingers might be bitten and injured by the patient. Secondly, when you try to save the patient child by inserting objects inside his mouth, you might lead to broken teeth that definitely could be aspirated and ends the child’s life. Also, the object that is inserted could be broken itself and aspirated into the child’s lung (8).
