Exercise Addiction – Symptoms, Causes, Risk Factors, Diagnosis and Treatment

Causes of Exercise Addiction

When you do exercises, the body releases dopamine and endorphins. These neurotransmitters are also produced during drug consumption to stimulate the reward system in the brain. As a result, an exercise addict may feel joy and reward when they work out. If they stop doing exercises, these substances may go away. Therefore, they have to work out more to encourage the release of these chemicals. In most cases, exercise addiction often begins with an obsessive thought for physical fitness. Some people with eating disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia, would experience an unhealthy desire for exercise. Another possible cause of exercise addiction is a body image disorder. [5]
