What is Marfan Syndrome?

Causes and Risk Factors

Marfan syndrome is an inherited or genetic condition. It occurs when there is a defection in fibrillin-1, a protein that plays a key part in the production of connective tissues. This problem leads to bone overgrowth and causes considerable height and long limbs. If a parent has Marfan syndrome, there is a 50% chance their children would also have it. Nevertheless, a spontaneous genetic defect in the egg or sperm can also trigger the syndrome even when both parents do not have genetic materials. Marfan syndrome can affect both women and men equally. It also happens among all ethnic groups and races. [3]
