Prevention
There are currently no particular measures to prevent hypoparathyroidism. Nevertheless, if you are planning to have neck or thyroid surgery, discuss with your doctor about the possible risk of damage or injury to the parathyroid glands. Some tests can be done before the procedure to check for levels of vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, and calcium. If you have recently had surgery involving the neck or thyroid, watch for typical symptoms and signs that would suggest the presence of hypoparathyroidism like muscle cramping or twitching, or a burning or tingling feeling in your lips or toes, or fingers.
