Ulcerative Colitis in Children – All the Facts You Need to Know

Treatments

Treatments for ulcerative colitis may depend on the severity of symptoms and their responses. The most-seen treatment for adults is to insert an enema (a medical device) into the colon through the anus. However, kids can’t tolerate receiving enema administration, and the method does not apply to them. In fact, medications could be a good option for children with ulcerative colitis.

  • Aminosalicylates
  • Immunomodulators or TNF-alpha blocking agents
  • Corticosteroids

Aminosalicylates, immunomodulators, or TNF-alpha blocking agents can fight inflammation and reduce inflammation reactions in the colon. Corticosteroid drugs are artificial steroid hormones used to suppress the immune system and prevent immune cells from attacking the colon.

If the medication treatment doesn’t work well and the symptoms worsen, it is necessary to take surgeries and remove the affected parts in case of the disease progression. Some recommendations include:

  • Proctocolectomy with Ileostomy: It involves total removal of the colon, rectum, and anus and performing an ileostomy to help patients pass food waste.
  • Ileoanal Anastomosis: After proctocolectomy, surgeons will create a pouch to connect the small intestine and the anus. Thus, patients can have bowel movements as usual

Partial or entire removals of the colon slightly affect the digestive function, yet children having ulcerative colitis can survive. There is a possibility of recurrence if children have partial colon removal surgery. Ulcerative colitis may reappear in the resting parts of the colon, so doctors may suggest removing the entire colon in some circumstances.
