Medical Conditions
Toe cramps can be a symptom of certain medical conditions.
– Restless leg syndrome can trigger nighttime leg and toe cramps, making it hard for people to fall asleep. This condition is more common in pregnant women.
– Neuropathy: Another possible cause is neuropathy, which occurs when nerves are damaged. As a result, the central nervous system cannot transport signals to control muscle functions properly. A common cause of nerve damage is diabetes.
– Poor blood flow: When your toes do not get enough blood flow, they might spasm or ache. Crossing the legs, having diabetes, sitting for a long period, and peripheral artery disease are common causes.
– Arthritis: This is a group of conditions that cause joint inflammation and pain. In many cases, toe cramps can be a sign.[6]
