10 Most Common Sepsis Treatments

Septicemia, also known as sepsis or blood infection, is a serious infection of the bloodstream. This condition happens when there is a bacterial infection in specific parts of the body, such as the skin or lungs, entering the bloodstream. This can be dangerous as the bacteria and toxins could be carried to the whole body through your bloodstream. Sepsis could become life-threatening quickly and must be hospitalized. If left untreated for an extended period, it would cause many severe complications. Below is a list of the top 10 most common sepsis treatments.

1Antibiotics

Antibiotics are the first-line treatment for bacterial infections that are causing sepsis. In most cases, there is not enough time to determine the kind of bacteria. Thus, the initial option would often be broad-spectrum antibiotics, which are specially made to fight against a variety of bacteria at the same time. Once the doctor has identified specific bacteria, more focused antibiotics will be used. Generally, a combination of 2 or 3 drugs is given at once. Some common antibiotics for treating sepsis include ceftazidime, cefotaxime, meropenem, ceftriaxone, ampicillin, levofloxacin, imipenem, sulbactam, cefepime, clindamycin, as well as tazobactam. [1]
