What Is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by the bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. It occurs when an infected deer tick bites and transmits the bacteria to humans. This tick may be infected when it feeds on infected mice, birds, or deer. In most cases, a tick has to stay on the skin for around 36 hours to cause the infection. That’s why many people with this condition do not remember anything about the bite. Lyme disease is currently the most common tick-borne illness in the United States and Europe. The risk is higher in those people who spend time or live in wooded areas. [1]
