Ecchymosis: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

What Is Ecchymosis?

Ecchymosis is an umbrella term to refer to the common bruise. Most cases occur when blood vessels around the skin surface are damaged, often after an injury or accident. The force from the direct impact leads to the leakage of blood after blood vessels are burst open. The leaked blood can be trapped under the skin and forms a small pool, which might turn the skin blue, black, or purple.

After the injury of a blood vessel, platelets in blood start to work to help with the clotting process. This can prevent the affected blood vessels from leaking further blood and make the bruises even larger. In addition, clotting factors, also known as proteins in the blood, can aid in stopping the bleeding and help tissue begin to heal. [1]
