How Erythema Nodosum Is Connected to IBD

What Is IBD?

Inflammatory bowel disease or IBD is a group of conditions that cause chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. Common forms of IDB include:

– Crohn’s disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract’s lining, which may involve the deeper parts of the digestive tract.

– Ulcerative colitis leads to sores and inflammation in the superficial lining of the rectum and large intestine.

Both forms of IBD may lead to common symptoms, such as weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, as well as diarrhea. If left treated, the condition may result in debilitating complications. [1]

What Are Erythema Nodosum?

Erythema nodosum, which literally means “red knots”, is an inflammatory condition on the skin. It causes painful lesions or nodules red that typically appear under the skin on the lower legs or arms. However, they may also show up in other parts of the body. These lumps are typically raised and tender to the touch. Erythema nodosum is more common in adults than in small kids. Women are also more likely to be affected than men. [2]
