Osteoporosis Causes & Risk Factors

Hormone Levels

Having too little or too much of some hormones in the body can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. Studies have shown that low levels of sex hormones would weaken bones. Indeed, the drop in estrogen levels in women when they reach menopause can be a major risk factor. In men, testosterone levels tend to decrease with age. Another possible cause is cancer treatment for prostate cancer in men or breast cancer in women. These procedures tend to reduce hormone levels and speed up bone loss. Having too much thyroid hormone would result in bone loss as well. It can happen when you take too much drugs to treat an underactive thyroid or when you have an overactive thyroid.[8]
