Osteomyelitis – Symptoms and Causes

4 Causes of Osteomyelitis

Staphylococcus Bacteria

Osteomyelitis is mostly caused by staphylococcus bacteria. They are a form of germs primarily found inside the nose or on the skin, even in healthy people. These species would penetrate our bones in different ways:

– Surgery: During surgical procedures to repair fractures or replace joints, direct contamination with bacteria would happen.

– Injuries: Serious puncture wounds would make it easier for bacteria to enter the body. When the injury is infected, germs would spread to a bone. The risk is especially high when you have a severely broken bone that sticks out through the skin.

– Bloodstream: Bacteria in other body parts like the bladder or lungs would reach a bone via the bloodstream. [5]
