Estrogen is a sex hormone. While men’s bodies also release this hormone, it is present at higher levels in women’s bodies. In general, estrogen plays many important roles in overall health. These include:

– The stop of milk after breastfeeding women wean
– Cholesterol and bone metabolism
– Regulation of food intake, glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and body weight
– Growth of the egg follicle in the ovaries
– Maintenance of the vaginal wall’s thickness and promotion of lubrication in the vagina
