Low Estrogen: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Causes of Low Estrogen

Low estrogen may be caused by different reasons. In general, any condition that damages or impacts the ovaries may reduce the levels of this hormone in the body. Age is the most common risk factor. When people get older and reach menopause, it is normal to experience a drop in estrogen levels. In fact, the decrease begins a few years before menopause, a period known as perimenopause. Some other possible causes of low estrogen include thyroid conditions, congenital conditions, premature ovarian failure, chemotherapy, extremely low body weight, strenuous exercise, and an underactive pituitary gland. A family history of hormonal issues may increase the risk of low estrogen in women as well. [5]
