Surgery
Many people with Crohn’s disease may have to undergo surgery at some point during their lifetime. Surgery is suggested for moderate to severe cases that involve an intestinal rupture, an abscess, excessive bleeding, or serious bowel obstruction. Common options include:
– Proctectomy: This procedure removes the anus and rectum
– Colectomy: This surgery removes the whole colon or the affected area in the colon. It is only done in people with severe symptoms
– Bowel resection: This procedure removes the affected area of the small intestine. It is suitable for people with a too large stricture
– Strictureplasty: This surgery works by widening a stricture, which is a narrowed passage in the intestine[9]
