Dietary Changes
There is no specific diet to control flares in people with Crohn’s disease. However, you can make some adjustments to manage symptoms and prevent certain triggers. These include:
– Keep a food journal to find out which foods or drinks would trigger flares and remove them from your diet
– Reduce consumption of alcohol and caffeinated drinks
– Avoid foods that may cause gas, such as cruciferous veggies or beans
– Avoid fried and greasy foods
– Avoid high-fiber foods, such as whole grains and raw veggies, as they make the intestines work more. Instead, choose low-fiber products, such as soups, broths, applesauce, bananas, or plain white rice, which can be digested easily by the body
– In more severe cases, your doctor would suggest a temporary diet with nutritional shakes and high-calorie liquid foods. This can help the digestive tract take a rest until it is able to tolerate solid products again. [8]
