Underlying Causes of Eczema
The exact causes of eczema are still unknown. Scientists believe that the condition is not triggered by a single cause, but a combination of many factors. Certain genes in the body would make certain individuals more prone to skin irritation, which makes it easier for allergens or bacteria to penetrate and affect the immune system. Specifically, some mutations affect the filaggrin, a protein that helps the skin barrier stay strong and healthy. While triggers can vary from person to person, most people may experience symptoms of eczema when they are exposed to stress, mold, pollen, pet dander, dust mites, chemicals, detergents, soaps, and food allergies.
