Beta Blockers
Beta-adrenergic blocking agents, often known as beta blockers, help reduce the adrenaline effect on the cardiovascular system, thus alleviating stress on the arteries and heart as well as slowing the heart rate. These medications can also widen arteries and veins to improve blood flow. Common options include acebutolol, betaxolol, carteolol, penbutolol, timolol, labetalol, propranolol, and more. Some of them affect both blood vessels and the heart, while others only affect the heart. There are some common side effects after taking beta blockers, including depression, fatigue, sexual dysfunction, worsening signs in those with peripheral artery disease, and worse shortness of breath in those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
