Hyperthyroidism
An overactive thyroid gland or hyperthyroidism is another trigger of goiter. In this condition, the thyroid hormone is made more than needed as a result of an autoimmune disorder, which signals the immune system of the body to activate and attack your thyroid gland. As a result, the organ becomes swollen and causes goiter. The risk is typically higher in women than in men. Hyperthyroidism is more likely to happen in those people who are over 60 years old. [5]
