Common Triggers of Restless Leg Syndrome

Medication Side Effects

Many medications, including both OTC and prescription drugs, would trigger and worsen symptoms of restless legs syndrome. Antidepressants can be a major risk factor because they would disrupt the pathway of dopamine in the brain. Make sure to discuss with your doctor if you notice symptoms after taking the following drugs: sertraline, fluoxetine, mirtazapine, and escitalopram. Also, certain antipsychotic medications that treat psychiatric disorders can lead to conditions. These include prochlorperazine, lithium, phenothiazine, haloperidol, and olanzapine. Other specific drugs and medications that would trigger restless legs syndrome include Sinemet, metoclopramide, levothyroxine, opioids, and antihistamines. [10]
